Tale of an Eureka moment.

I was passing a shop yesterday that had these huge speakers playing a very weird music. The music was terrible, playing so loudly, and the speakers had awful sound quality. Everyone was hurrying past in disgust and I was no exception.

While blocking my ears and increasing my pace to get out of there as fast as possible, I noticed two weird old women dancing to the music. They were singing along too and seemed to be having such a good time. That’s when it hit me!

It’s all about the one.

As you start a new business you do some research that literally tells you: “find your target market and you will make lots of sales”. But the reality is not as glorious as they paint it to be which you realize shortly after starting your business.

You’ve posted on your status and sent broadcast message to everyone you know that seems to be fit the description of your target audience. Yet, people are refusing to “DM if interested”.

I implore you today to not loose faith, because it’s all about the one. You will find one wierd old woman that would dance to your tune. When you do, treat her very very well so she feels satisfied enough to get you another wierd old woman to come and dance too.

You know why? Because birds of the same feather flock together. Your “one” will always know another one. And that one will bring another two. And the two will bring five. With patience and consistency, you’ll build a community of loyal customers.

What next?

Indomie would have been a good company if it had just continued selling the classic Indomie noodles. But what makes it a great company is innovation. New flavours, new sizes. Create new and/or upgraded versions of what you’re selling.

Consider selling complimentary products as some point too. If you’re selling akara (bean cake), sell bread too. If you’re selling shoes, sell socks too.

Keep innovating, keep adding new products; because it’s always easier to sell something new to all old friend than it is to find a new weird old woman.

Share this to an entrepreneur you know.
